Few actors are more identified with western movies than Randolph Scott. Between 1945 and 1962, Scott appeared in 42 feature films, all but three of them westerns. In fact, in the late 1940s and early 1950s, he appeared in as many as four westerns per year. Between 1930 and 1945, Scott established himself as a versatile actor and appeared in musical comedies, romantic dramas, and action thrillers opposite stars such as Cary Grant, Tyrone Power, Henry Fonda, and John Wayne among others. |

But after World War II, Scott worked with producer Harry Joe Brown and director Budd Boetticher to produce outstanding western movies that expanded Scott's fan base. American film actor, his father, James, a soldier and barroom brawler, was Scotch-Irish on his father's side and Blackfoot Indian on his mother's. His mother, Ann, was a Norwegian immigrant. Mitchum is largely remembered for his starring roles in several major works of the film noir genre. Mitchum is considered a forerunner of the antiheroes prevalent in film in the 1950s and 60s. He died in his sleep on July 1 1997 of lung cancer and emphysema, at the age of seventy-nine. His The Big Sleep co-star James Stewart died the next day.
