LORNE GREENE

A man of many talents, Lorne Greene first made his mark in show biz as "The Voice of Canada" using his deep, soothing voice to broadcast news of World War Two. After switching his focus to acting, Greene began garnering roles in TV and movies, many in Westerns. A guest spot on Wagon Train helped him land the plumb role of Ben Cartwright, which catapulted him to fame.

While starring on Bonanza, Lorne Greene recorded seven LPs of music for RCA Records

He even climbed all the way to the top of the charts with his number one hit "Ringo" in 1964. The B-Side of the single had a lyrical version of the Bonanza theme song.

The big break in Hugh O'Brian's career came in 1954, when he was chosen to portray the legendary lawman Wyatt Earp on TV. JAMES ARNESS

James Arness became one of television's best-known heroes during the twenty years he spent on the series Gunsmoke (1955-75), playing Marshal Matt Dillon, a role for which he was recommended by John Wayne. Since Gunsmoke, Arness has appeared in How the West was Won (1976-79), McClain's Law (1981-82) and several Gunsmoke television movies. His younger brother, Peter Graves, is also an actor.

ROBERT VAUGHAN

American actor noted for stage, screen and TV work. Vaughn's first notable appearance was as one of The Magnificent Seven In 1964, he starred as Napoleon Solo, the eponymous Man from U.N.C.L.E., but much of his thunder was stolen by co-star David McCallum. He is currently the only one of the Magnificent Seven still living as of 2005.

CLAYTON MOORE

Best known for playing the fictional western character The Lone Ranger, along with co-star Jay Silverheels in the role of Tonto with Fred Foy intoning the famous introduction, "...the Lone Ranger rides again!". The programme became the highest-rated programme to that point on the fledgling ABC network and its first true "hit".

After two successful seasons, Moore was removed from the role in a pay dispute and made a few other feature films. The public was not very acceptive of his replacement, actor John Hart, and the owners of the programme relented and rehired Moore.

ROBERT CULP

American actor, best known for his work on television. Culp became famous for his role on the espionage series I Spy, opposite Bill Cosby, but in fact, he had had an extensive film career prior to that 1965 programme, most notably in PT 109.

He went on to star in the movie Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, and played the murderer in three Columbo television movies.

BILL COSBY

Producer Sheldon Leonard landed Cosby a break-out television role in I Spy (1965), the first time an African-American actor starred in a weekly dramatic television series. Cosby won two Emmy Awards for his portrayal of an undercover CIA agent.

Starred in popular Western series, Maverick, starring in the role of Brett Maverick (1957-1960), co-starring with Jack Kelly as his brother Bart Maverick (1957-1962), and later on Roger Moore as younger brother Beauregarde ("Beau") Maverick (1960-1961; for one season-1961, Robert Colbert played another brother, Brent Maverick). But Garner was the big star of the show, making him a household favourite.
